A New You in 2017
So how are the resolutions for 2017 coming along? Well, if you’re like many people, you may already have struggled a bit; a good number of you may have even given up already! No one said change was easy, that’s for sure. But you should feel good about yourself for a number of reasons.
First, making resolutions to begin with is a sign that self-improvement is important to you. This is the first step that anyone must take to do something better – whether that be working out, eating healthy, not smoking, improving your work life or personal life – everything. And not everyone gets to the place where they take action, knowing that change is necessary in their lives. But you have, and you should feel proud of that!
Second, you should realize that we use January 1st because it is convenient on the calendar, and it represents a re-birth, or reset, for the whole year that is to come.
But there is no reason why a resolution has to begin that day more than any other. January 29th, when Upper Limits has our one day membership sale, where you and your family can join the gym at very discounted rates, is every bit as good as the 1st (and you’re still in January! So you’re still in the first month of the year at least!)
Willpower Doesn’t Last
A good tip to help you stick your fitness goals in 2017 – know that willpower is overrated. The truth is, willpower can last for a day, week, month or even longer, when you are super excited about reaching your goal. But what happens when you’re not so excited? Willpower can’t last forever, and the reality sets in: most people are just not physically or mentally prepared for drastic lifestyle changes.
However, there is something that DOES work in this scenario. Creating a habit.
Habits become the types of things that become so ingrained in your life that you soon forget they weren’t always there. Let’s say you begin coming to the gym on Tuesday and Thursday mornings as just one example, and you get in a 45 minute workout each time. Think about the results of your goal, those are the things that are the truly motivating part, though don’t look too far ahead either. Once you’ve set a plan in motion, focus on this week. Think to yourself “This is what I do on Tuesday mornings now”.
You’ll have a lot to look forward to, because workouts at our three Upper Limits Rock Climbing Gyms in St. Louis are very engaging, challenging and unique – an experience you’ll find in no other fitness center in town. But simply create the expectation that you will be here every Tuesday and Thursday morning, as if it was an appointment like any other.
Willpower will help you along at the beginning, but soon your habit will grow stronger, to the point where it needs no additional motivation. This is why it is important to have 1) specific goals “I will work out 30 minutes 3 times per week” vs. “I will workout this year” and 2) specific times “Tuesday and Thursday” helps create a habit; “two mornings per week” does not help create one.
Other Resolution Tips
Don’t forget the other resolution tips we’ve shared too. Keep them simple and tangible, be realistic while going outside your comfort zone, break your goals into pieces and reward yourself along the way.
It is very daunting to think about losing 30 pounds, but much more manageable to think about losing the first 5. Once you’ve hit your goal, reward yourself with a new piece of workout clothing or something else that supports your overall goals.
Also, tell as many people as you can about your resolutions, so they can help provide the encouragement – and accountability – that makes change in your life possible.
And if you slip up, don’t stress out about it! It happens to the best of us. Just take the knowledge you learned from that experience and start right back on track headed towards your destination.
It takes 3 -10 weeks for any new activity to become a habit according to research, and up to 6 months to become a true part of our personality. So be patient and persistent, It won’t happen overnight! If you’ve run out of steam in keeping your resolution by February, don’t give up. Not at all. Start over again! Our Upper Limits Indoor Rock Climbing Gym Membership Sale is just the solution you need to stay on track with your fitness goals in 2017! Our rock climbing gym membership sale is the perfect way for you to stay on track this year.
Recommit yourself for 24 hours. You can do anything for 24 hours, right? You can make a single trip to the gym, right? The 24-hour increments will soon build on each other and, before you know it, you will be back on track.
Indoor Rock Climbing
Rock climbing is a sport that you will never tire of, with exciting new challenges to face every month you are a member here. It builds strength, teamwork and self-confidence, and provides the type of unique experience that the people who couldn’t stand the idea of lifting weights endlessly can really enjoy.
As you workout with us as a new or intermediate climber, or even a more experienced one, it’s important that you track your progress too. Remember that even though willpower over the long-haul is overrated – pride in your accomplishments can be a nice shot in the arm that we can all use at times.
There is no better time during the year to join Upper Limits than now. We offer special pricing for any of our three area gyms, or a Gold membership for just $20 more that gives you access to all three as part of our January 29th sale.
You want to take the time to check out our Chesterfield location, too! In addition to innovative bouldering section and top rope wall, our Wacky Walls section at our brand new Indoor Climbing Gym in Chesterfield features many themes just for kids, like dinosaur bones, a beanstalk, a house to climb, stackable blocks, a side-by-side race to the top and others.
Our Wacky Walls section is the best indoor gym for kids for birthday or other parties in the St. Louis metro area, also great for scouting events, youth retreats, family events and other gatherings.
