After completing a waiver, every new visitor is guided through a 10-15 minute orientation of the gym by one of our experienced staff members. We have routes for all levels of difficulty and experience. Though not required, if you would like to learn more about rock climbing, how to belay on our top ropes, or climbing technique, take a look at our indoor climbing classes.
How old do you have to be to climb?
There is no minimum age requirement for climbing in the gym. However, we do require participants 13 and younger to be accompanied by an adult at all times. If an adult is simply accompanying a child and not climbing, the adult does not have to pay (with the exception of Rock Gym 101). However, everyone entering the rock climbing area must fill out a waiver. Waivers for minors must be completed by the legal guardian.
What clothing and equipment are necessary?
We recommend wearing apparel appropriate for exercising or gym activities (including close-toed shoes). To climb in the Wacky Walls area, a harness is required. To rock climb in the climbing gym area, a harness and climbing shoes are required. To boulder in the climbing gym area, climbing shoes are required. Climbing equipment is available for rent at the front desk.
When is open climb and what are your hours?
Are reservations necessary?
Reservations are only required for special groups, classes, and other similar events. However, if you have a group of 8 or more participants visiting at one time, please be courteous and call ahead to communicate so we can expect your arrival.
Are passes hourly or all day?
For the Wacky Walls area only, passes and rentals are good on an hourly basis. For the climbing gym and fitness area, day passes and equipment rentals are good for all day, meaning you can leave and return as much as you please during the day of your visit.
Can I purchase gift cards?
Do you offer large-group rates for open climbing?
For the Wacky Walls area, group rates are available through our Birthday Party and Group Adventure offerings. For the climbing gym and fitness area, we do offer special rates for open climb groups of 10 or more people who contact us more than 48 hours before the visit and pay a $5 deposit per climber before the visit. Please call for details.
Do you have birthday parties?
Not only do we offer birthday parties, we throw the BEST birthday parties in St. Louis! Reservations are recommended at least 2 weeks in advance, as spots fill up quickly. You can get more information about our parties, including pricing, by clicking here.
I have a group of Scouts, what can we do?
We LOVE hosting scout troops at Upper Limits and we have tons of options for scout leaders to bring a group in, including Scout Discount Night, Group Adventures, and Team Building opportunities. We also have Merit Badge counselors on staff for Boy Scouts looking to earn their Merit Badge!
I have significant climbing experience. What do I need to do to climb at your facility?
No matter the experience, every new visitor must complete a 10-15 minute orientation of our facility. To top-rope belay in our facility, you must request a belay test from one of our available staff members as soon as you arrive. The test comes with a small fee and takes anywhere from 10-20 minutes, so please come prepared. You will need to demonstrate proper belay technique with an ‘ATC’ style belay device, tie-in with a figure-eight knot, and demonstrate proper use of climbing commands and safety checks. After completing a waiver, orientation, and belay check, you will be free to belay and climb in our facility.
Outside of instruction in the Lead 101 class, there is no open lead climbing allowed in the Chesterfield gym. For those desiring to lead climb, please visit our Maryland Heights or Downtown STL locations.
